In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks. Take a walk to feed the soul — John Muir

Journeying away from the daily routine sharpens our senses to listen and see and feel the presence of God the Creator in the world around us. Maybe you’ve experienced for yourself how “mountain experiences” help us to become more aware of how God is with us in every moment and place.

You’ll recall from Scripture how Jesus often retreated to the wilderness, to recharge, refocus, and discern the will of his Heavenly Father.

Following this example, Holy Adventure Outdoor Ministry, located in Central Illinois, provides distinctive outdoor retreat opportunities for adults. These retreats provide a unique encounter with Jesus Christ, His Good News, and His importance in our lives while immersed in the beauty and simplicity of God’s creation.

Along the way, you’ll learn about traveling and living comfortably and safely in the wilderness and learn the basics of a wide variety of wilderness living and survival skills. You might be surprised when you learn how wilderness living and travel skills from people in biblical times are still used today!

One to three-day retreats on various topics are scheduled throughout the year in Illinois.  Watch this website for announcements.  Special focus workshops and retreats are also an option for men’s and women’s prayer groups, college faith communities, and other groups.

Thanks for visiting our website!  I welcome your comments and questions. If you would like to discuss an outdoor retreat that meets the needs of your particular group, please send me a message through the contact form link at the top of this web page.

May God bless you in your journey.

Peace and All Good,
Deacon Kevin Richardson

Each gathering or retreat is different, depending upon the individuals in the group and the purpose of the journey. You’ll hike, camp, rest, pray, and learn while listening for the whispering voice of God in your life.

Programs offer an introduction to a wide variety of wilderness living and survival skills.  For example, you’ll learn how to:

  • Make a fire several ways without matches
  • Use a knife, saw, and hatchet
  • Find your way in the wilderness using map and compass
  • Build a warm shelter with no tools
  • Cook for the group over an open fire
  • Find and harvest wild food
  • Find water and make it safe to drink
  • Make useful items from wood, clay, and other natural resources

Learn these skills and more in various day and overnight adventures led by Holy Adventure.
